Eligibility is primarily based on age, with individuals becoming eligible at age 65. People under 65 may qualify if they have certain disabilities or medical conditions.

    Medicare consists of several parts.

    • Part A (Hospital Insurance): Covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care and some home health care.
    • Part B (Medical Insurance): Covers outpatient care, preventive services, doctor visits and some home health care.
    • Part C (Medicare Advantage): A private insurance plan that combines coverage from Part A and Part B. It may also include additional benefits like vision and dental.
    • Part D (Prescription Drug Coverage): Provides prescription drug coverage through private insurance plans.

Initial enrollment typically occurs around your 65th birthday. The Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) is a seven-month period that includes the three months before, the month of and the three months after your 65th birthday.
